CAKE is the Sacramento-based band that continues to chart its own singular course. More than three decades after its formation, the group's commitment to its founding principles remains strong. Originally emerging as a somewhat antagonistic response to the prevailing trends of the era, CAKE has built a career defined by democratic decision-making, fierce independence, and a sound that defies categorization.
The band writes, arranges, produces, and records its music in a solar-powered studio in Sacramento that regularly generates more electricity than it consumes, at times causing the building's electrical meter to run in reverse. This spirit of self-reliance extends beyond the studio. For nearly 20 years, CAKE has given away a native tree sapling at virtually every concert, extending the band's environmental commitment through its ongoing CAKE Forest initiative.
Their most recent album, Showroom of Compassion, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and was praised by The New Yorker as "deadpan brilliance." Seamlessly blending elements of rock, funk, country, folk and pop, CAKE continues to create music that is unmistakably unique.
The band is currently completing its ninth studio album, slated for release in 2027. The forthcoming record will include "Billionaire in Space," a new song that debuted during a Texas Public Radio session last autumn.
